Shopping for a new enclosure for your shower is not just a case of picking something that takes your fancy and hiring an installation team to fit it in your bathroom. There are a number of practical considerations that need to be taken into account as certain types of shower enclosures just won’t work in certain spaces. If you have no idea what these considerations might be, take a look at the points to consider below before you start to shop around in earnest.
Some Shower Enclosures Are Just Not Suitable for Your Bathroom
Make sure that you do not buy something totally inappropriate for your bathroom renovation project by making a mental note of the dos and don’ts that follow.
- Do take Accurate Measurements – One of the simplest mistakes that you could make is also one of the easiest to avoid. Always take accurate measurements of the space where you propose to install your new enclosure to make sure that you do not purchase something that is too big or too small. Remember to take account of the space that will be required to open your glass shower doors, if you want doors that open outwards, and measure the whole space at least twice to ensure accurate results.
- Do Choose Sliding or Bi-Fold Doors When Clearance Space is an Issue – If you have a very limited amount of space in front of the location where you are thinking of installing one of the shower enclosures that you have seen for sale, you should choose one with a sliding or bi-fold door (which open inwards) to avoid any problems.
- Don’t Buy a Separate Shower Tray – Unless you are building a recessed shower, in which case you will have no other choice, make sure that all of the shower enclosures you are considering come with their own tray. If you buy one separately, you are almost guaranteed to encounter problems when it is being fitted.
- Don’t Buy an Enclosure That Is Too Small – Although not quite as bad as buying one that is too big, as you wouldn’t even be able to fit it in the first place, a shower enclosure that is too small will not prove to be a good investment in the long run. If you can look at them in a local showroom, step inside each one that takes your fancy and make sure you have plenty of room for manoeuvre once you are inside. It’s even worth mimicking a few of the moves you normally make in the shower; don’t worry what other shoppers think, it’s your bathroom and you need to make the right choice!
Once you have established which shower enclosures will fit your bathroom size-wise and which feature glass shower doors that are practical for the space in question, you can focus on aesthetics and narrow your final choice down to those enclosures that really appeal to you visually.
