How to Repair a Hole in a Closet Door

It’s happened to the best of us: something fell against the closet door and left a big, gaping hole in it. Now you’re standing there wondering how to repair a hole in a closet door. Can it be done? How hard is it? What do you need to buy? Let’s take a deep breath and answer these questions together! After all, it’s only a closet door.

Filling the Hole

The first step to repair a hole in a closet door is to fill the hole. Most closet doors are hollow to keep them lightweight and to lower the cost of production. This can be both a blessing and a curse. While it does mean they get damaged easier, repairing the damage is easier than if it were something solid. Unfortunately, the only way to patch the hole means giving the patch something to rest against. Therefore, you must fill the hole with something.

While the easiest way to fill a hole in a closet door is by using an expanding spray foam, you can also use a combination of cardboard scraps and putty. Packing the hole with cardboard will give your patch something to adhere to and prevent it from getting knocked in again.

Patching the Hole on Cardboard Packing

If you opt for packing the hole with cardboard, patching it will be easy. You won’t even need to buy a patching kit. Most patching kits come with a piece of screen to cover the hole with and to spread putty or plaster over. However, if you’ve packed the hole in your door firmly and have a solid piece of cardboard behind the hole, you can simply apply your putty or plaster directly over it.

To repair a hole in a closet door, we recommend using putty, as its finished texture will be closer to the door’s than plaster. Carefully spread your patch putty over the hole. Then scrape any excess off with a putty knife or other flat edge. Spread additional putty over any pockets or holes in the surface, then scrape it clean again. Repeat this until the putty is smooth and covers the entire hole.

Patching the Hole on Spray Foam

To repair a hole in a closet door with spray foam, simply spray some expanding foam into the hole in the door. After letting it expand into the hole in the door, scrape away any that protrudes from it. Once it’s hardened, you can also cut away any protruding foam.

Once the foam has hardened, ensure none of it meets or passes the surface of the door. You’ll be covering the foam with putty. That way, the patch is of a similar texture to the smooth closet door finish. Spread the putty over the hole, then scrape it clean with a putty knife or spreader. Apply putty to any remaining pockets or holes, then repeat the scraping process until smooth.

Replace Broken Closet Doors

Sometimes it’s not worth the time and effort to repair a hole in a closet door. If your closet door has already sustained a lot of damage, it might be time to just buy a new one. Fortunately, if you live in Toronto, it’s easy to buy a replacement closet door of any style from Keystone Home Products. Just give us a call if you have any questions about what we have available.

Master Bedroom Wall Mirrors

If you’re looking for a great accent to your master bedroom, wall mirrors are a great idea. They come with a number of benefits past just offering you something to plan an outfit in. Let’s check out some of the ways they can improve your room and everyday life.

View Full Outfits

Of course, the first benefit of any big mirror is the ability to view your entire outfit at once. A bathroom vanity is limited to showing you how you look from the waist up. Sure, you can stand on a chair or back all the way out of the bathroom door in the hopes of seeing the rest. However, getting mirror walls for your bedroom will make this unnecessary.

Floor to ceiling mirrors allow you to comfortably try on clothes and view your entire outfit at once. This is great for professionals who need to look their best when they go into work each day. Even if you wear the same type of clothes each workday, a mirror does more than help you color coordinate. Being able to see yourself prevents embarrassing outfit mishaps like part of your shirt being untucked in the back. Get the full picture with master bedroom wall mirrors.

Create a Lighter Room

Seeing how you look is only the most basic benefit to having master bedroom wall mirrors. In addition to that, master bedroom wall mirrors will also make the room lighter. Mirrors reflect light – both from outside and from lamps. The reflected light bounces around the room, illuminating areas that would otherwise be dim or entirely dark. Creating a lighter room with your floor to ceiling mirrors will make finding things easier and can even reduce depression.

Make Your Room Feel Bigger

Finally, master bedroom wall mirrors will make your room feel bigger. Having an entire wall reflecting the room back on itself will make it feel twice as big. Even if you don’t actually have that extra space, tricking your brain into feeling like it’s there can make the actual size of your room feel much less cramped. Even small rooms with floor to ceiling mirrors can feel big and spacious.

Mirror Closet Doors

If your wall of choice for wall mirrors has a closet in it, fear not. You may not be able to install regular wall mirrors where your closet is, but you can install mirror closet doors. With regular wall mirrors and mirror closet doors working together, you can cover your entire wall with mirrors in one form or another.

Home Goods for Your Basement Renovation

If you’re planning to renovate your basement, there are some things you’ll need. While many department stores offer the cushy furnishings you’ll need, or the bathroom towels, Keystone offers something different. We have less thrilling, but incredibly vital, parts, like shelving, mirrors, and closet doors. Here’s a little bit about what we offer in terms of home goods for your basement renovation.

Shelving

Every basement needs some shelving. Well, any room needs some shelving, really. Your basement is no different. And, after you’ve renovated it, it will be completely bare and in need of some vital shelving additions.

Display

First off, you’ll need display shelving. Most basements have some need for display. Whether you need shelves for books, video games, decor, or something else, we’ve got you covered.

Our wooden organizers are great for these purposes. While they’re usually marketed toward closet storage, there’s nothing about them that dictates they’re strictly for closet use. Our wooden organizers are great for visible storage and displays as well.

In fact, they can even be used as entertainment centers. What sets them apart from other entertainment centers is the abundance of storage. Many TV stands offer the very least in terms of storage. For someone with a movie or game collection, a set of gaming consoles, or the desire to border the TV with bookshelves, standard TV stands don’t cut it.

Storage

Display shelving is important, but storage shelving may be even more so. Home goods for your basement renovation must include shelving in places like closets and bedrooms. While the aforementioned wooden organizers are great for closets, we can’t ignore our wire shelving. This shelving is great for smaller closets that don’t have room to accommodate an entire organizer. It allows fabric to breathe, preventing mildew, closet smell, and pests.

Closet Doors

Once the structure is built, you may come to realize your closet is a bit… open concept. That is to say, you’ll need some closet doors. Keystone Home Products has a variety of closet doors. We offer sliding doors as well as bifold doors. Either style can be bought covered with mirrors as well. Mirror closet doors allow comfort while dressing and help to make a space feel bigger. This is vital if your basement bedroom is a small guest room.

Mirrors

While mirrors on the backs of closet doors are one way to offer you or your guests a reflection, we can’t forget the vanity. If you’ve added a bathroom during your basement renovation, a vanity mirror is one of the home goods you can’t do without.

Here at Keystone, you can get a mirror in any size or dimensions. Check out our handy installation guide to see how you can install it yourself.

Shop Keystone Home Products

If you’re shopping for home goods for a basement renovation in Toronto, Keystone is the local home goods store for you. We’re right next door and offer everything you need to turn an empty, finished basement into part of your home. Give us a call if you need help or have questions about our products.

Custom Closet Doors for Unusual Closet Sizes

While homes are usually built to a certain standard, that’s not a guarantee for every home. This is especially true of homes that were built a long time ago or that were built by someone’s great granddad. When things get more personal, they also get more unusual. While unusual can be fun and attractive, it can also be a huge pain when it comes to replacing things. For example, if you have a home with unusual closet sizes, you may need some help finding custom closet doors. Fortunately, Keystone Home Products is here to help. If your closet is strangely tall or weirdly wide, we can help you replace those old doors in no time.

Sliding Custom Closet Doors

If you’re looking for sliding custom closet doors, you’ve come to the right place. Keystone Home Products has sliding closet doors of all styles. We offer a large selection of frame colors as well as different finishes for the panel doors.

Each set of doors is made to fit the closet they’re being made for. Therefore, if you have an oddly shape closet, we can make doors just for you. Don’t worry about standard closet door sizes; we’ve got you covered.

Sliding closet doors are great for saving space in a small room or building. The closet entrance can even be partially covered and still accessible.

Custom Mirror Closet Doors

We don’t just have custom panel sliding doors; we also have custom mirror closet doors. These are sliding closet doors as well, but the external side is a large mirror, the length of each door.

These are a great choice for small spaces as well. Mirrors help reflect a space back on itself. This provides an optical illusion of double the space, making your room feel less cramped. Mirrors also reflect light, which can make a little bit of sun from the window go twice as far!

If your room is short on space, custom mirror closet doors are also great for getting ready in the morning. Without room for a vanity or standing mirror, these built in mirrors offer some assistance. Check out your entire outfit before stepping out of the house.

Custom Bi-fold Closet Doors

If space is less of a concern and you would rather see your entire wardrobe at once, custom bi-fold doors may be just what you need. These two doors pull out, bending in half as they’re opened and allowing you full view of the closet. These are also ideal if you use your closet as a storage space. Sliding doors can make moving large boxes in and out of a closet difficult. Bi-fold closet doors, on the other hand, allow you to store things of all sizes within your closet.

No matter what type of doors you’re after, we’ve got what you need. Give us a call and let us know you’re looking for custom closet doors and we’ll get to work.

How to Remove Bi-Fold Closet Doors to Replace Them

If you’re planning to replace your closet door(s), you’re going to need to know the trick to removing them. All closet door types have different hardware connecting them to the closet food frame. Today, we’re going to focus on how to remove bi-fold closet doors.

How They’re Secured

This type of closet door is one of the trickiest to figure out without help. While most people have some idea of how to take off a regular door, and sliding doors can be figure out with some jimmying, bi-fold doors are a bit tougher.

Bi-fold doors are held in place by two pegs – one on top and one on bottom. The top one is the one we’re working with to remove the door. It looks like the image below. If you’re familiar with the door on a pet carrier, you’ll be quick to pick up how bi-fold doors are secured.

Looking at the peg holding a bi-fold door in place, it’s fairly intuitive that it must retract somehow. In fact, it’s spring-loaded. However, what makes these difficult is that these pegs are strong. The springs in them aren’t childsplay. After all, they have to hold a door on. If the springs were weak, the peg could come loose and the door could fall off, injuring someone, or worse.

How to Remove Bi-Fold Closet Doors

So, to remove bi-fold closet doors, the first thing you need to do is find something flat and metal. Or, if you have some really strong twine, that may also work. If you look at the sample picture, you’ll see a ring around the top of the peg. This is usually flush, or almost flush, with the hardware screwed into the door frame. In order to retract the peg, you have to have something that can hook over that ring and pull downward without breaking.

Twine Method

Let’s talk about the twine method first. This method is really only possible if there is a small gap between the peg’s ring and the hardware or door frame. Take a piece of twine about half a meter long and position it behind the peg, centered. Slip the twine between the peg ring and frame hardware. Bring the twine forward, crossing it in the front, and then circling around behind the peg again. Cross it to the front once more and tie it in a knot.

The twine has now looped twice around the peg. Hold the door with one arm and wrap the end of the twine around the other hand once. Pull down. If the twine is strong enough not to break, it will pull the peg down, removing it from the frame hardware and freeing the door.

Metal Method

If there’s no gap between the peg and frame hardware, or you have no strong twine on hand, you’ll want something flat and metal. A butter knife may work well, but should be used with caution. This may also scratch or bend what you’re using, so don’t use something you cherish.

Slip the flat piece of metal you’ve found between the peg ring and frame hardware. You’ll need two hands for this, so have someone else hold the door, or press it toward the wall with your body. When the metal is in place, place one hand on either end of it and pull down. It should do to retract the peg if it’s strong enough.

Buy Bi-Fold Door Replacements

When you successfully remove bi-fold closet doors, the next step is replacing them. Keystone Home Products has great framed or unframed mirror, bi-fold door replacements. Check out our selection today and get a great deal on your next set of closet doors.

Replace Sliding Closet Doors in Toronto

Keeping organized can be difficult when you don’t have all of the necessary help. When you think of some of the most important storage areas in your house, is your bedroom closet one of the first places you think of? If not, try to imagine your life without it! While bedroom closets provide one of the most important storage spaces we own, we don’t necessarily want to see everything they’re doing for us. For most of us, forgetting all of that stuff is there until we need it is the organizational ideal. Therefore, if you need to replace sliding closet doors in Toronto, Keystone Home Products is your local solution.

Replace Broken Sliding Closet Doors

There are two ways broken sliding closet doors can become a thorn in your side. The first way is becoming completely unusable and having to be removed. A broken slider door that has to be removed leaves the contents of your closet completely exposed. Not only is this unappealing to look at, it’s not the best way to store fabrics and can actually lower the quality of the storage. Moths and other bugs have an easier time finding exposed clothing. Plus, your clothes can become dustier, be sun-bleached, and more.

However, what may be worse is a broken closet door that still works to some degree. We humans can be stubborn, and a sliding closet door that can still be opened and closed with some effort is a door we will continue using as long as possible. Instead of struggling to access your closet or forcing yourself to look at something that’s been cracked, dented, or broken through, replace your slider door today.

Upgrade Closet Door Appearance

Broken closet doors may leave us in dire straights, but a change in aesthetic can also have us scouring the market for replacements. If you’ve recently put a new coat of paint on the walls or simply haven’t updated your closet door since the sixties, it might be time to invest.

Keystone Home Products has beautiful sliding closet doors in Toronto. Our doors come in multiple earth-tone colors, making them great for updated rooms. We also have sliding mirror doors, if you like improved light flow or getting a look at your outfit before leaving the house. Get something that matches and feels like part of the intended design and throw out that old off-white door you’ve been cringing at for ages.

Try Something New

While sliding closet doors are popular, there are many other styles as well. If you’ve been using bi-fold doors for a while now, it might be worth considering the switch to sliders. Slider closet doors require no space in front of the closet to open and close. This makes them ideal for rooms with a slightly tight fit. Furniture that sticks out slightly in front of the closet won’t hinder their ability to open. Plus, that pile of dirty laundry will no longer stop you from reaching the clean stuff within.

Get Closet Doors in Toronto

When you’re ready to shop sliding closet doors in Toronto, Keystone is the place to go. Give us a call or come by our store today if you have questions or want to know more about our closet sliders. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sliding Closet Doors for Apartment Bedrooms

Running an apartment complex or building and want to improve your units? Or, maybe you’re planning to have a new complex built in the near future? No matter what the case, Keystone Home Products can help you out with sliding closet doors for apartment bedrooms. Our sliding closet doors are high quality and look great. Here’s what we can do for you.

Replace Broken Closet Doors

Apartment tenants come and go with quick, year-to-year turnover. Most don’t stay in an apartment for more than 3 years, and those who do rarely stay past 5. With all of the in and out of different people, there comes a lot of damage to the apartment – especially to parts that aren’t as sturdy as others.

One part of an apartment that may take frequent damage is the doors to the closets. Closet doors are typically hollow. The thin boards making up the faces of the door are easy to put a hole through if you’re not careful. While cheap, closet doors are possibly to patch up, patches rarely look nice. These types of doors usually have a faux woodgrain pattern on them and a patch will leave an obvious blemish. Instead, consider replacing sliding closet doors through Keystone Home Products. Our sliding doors are affordable and can be bought in multiples.

New Apartment Closet Design

If you’re looking into the steps to build a new apartment complex or building, something you should consider is the most efficient use of space. While many apartments have walk-in closets or coat-closet sized spaces with swinging doors, they’re inefficient. Closets with sliding doors help maximize space and space usage. Not only do they allow tenants to view and access closet contents without having to dig around in the closet depths, their doors are space-efficient.

Swinging doors take a certain amount of floor space, while sliding doors remain in their track and overlap instead. With the size of many apartments’ bedrooms, the ability to open the closet without needing two square feet of empty floor space is vital. Choose a design that uses sliding closet doors and let Keystone assist in construction.

Mirror Closet Doors

Want to make small apartment rooms look bigger? Using sliding closet doors with mirrors on their faces is a great way to do that. Mirrors reflect the existing space as well as encourage light flow. This is a very effective optical illusion that helps a small space feel larger. Tenants love to maximize the small spaces available to them and this will help them do that. By making your apartment bedrooms look more sizeable, you’re also more likely to get new tenants. After all, no one likes feeling cramped and closed in.

Order from Keystone

Keystone Home Products offers sliding closet doors in multiple colors and designs. Check out our selection to see if any are right for you. When you’re ready to make your selection, contact us to discuss making an order or come to our Toronto store to purchase them in person.

Outfit Your Studio Apartment with Aluminum Dividers

Looking to give your studio apartment a little more privacy without restricting light flow? There’s an easy solution from Keystone Home Products. By installing aluminum dividers, you can give your apartment more separated spaces while still allowing the sun in. But, how do aluminum dividers work? Let’s check them out!

Windows or Walls?

What exactly are aluminum dividers? They block off rooms, but they let light through: does that make them windows or walls? The answer is, they’re not really either. These opaque, glass dividers don’t allow visibility, but they do let light pass through, mostly unhindered. This makes them unique from both windows and walls. These exceptional dividers give you the best of both worlds.

A New Bedroom

Studio apartments, having everything, more or less, in one room, don’t come with a lot of privacy. This can be pretty uncomfortable if you live with a partner or roommate.

Most people enjoy a sense of coziness in their bedroom space. Feeling as if you can sprawl out, unobserved, is an important part of sleep comfort. Knowing you can be seen while your roommate is cooking breakfast is rather off-putting.

Plus, smells and noises can also disrupt sleep. By sectioning off part of the room to sleep in, you block out some of those unnecessary distractions, making sleep easier and more comfortable.

If you live with a roommate, you may even be able to section off a sleeping space for both of you. Not every studio apartment is big enough to accommodate two small bedrooms, but sleeping quarters don’t have to be bedrooms. Cordoning off the area around the bed and storying personal belongings elsewhere in the apartment will give you both some privacy without using up valuable breathing space.

Light Flow

Privacy in your bedroom space isn’t the only thing aluminum dividers are good for, however. You can accomplish the same thing with many types of dividers. The reason why aluminum dividers are superior is their ability to let light go where it wants.

If your bed is near a window, sectioning off the sleeping area with solid dividers would destroy a significant amount of natural light flow from the rest of the living space. With aluminum dividers, the light will pass through without problem, illuminating the living space on the other side without compromising your privacy.

Other Uses for Aluminum Dividers

These dividers aren’t just good for bedroom spaces. Studio apartments can feel altogether too open sometimes. If you like a bit of separation in your living space, there are more uses for them.

Consider putting up one or two panels between your dining space and living room. This allows your dining space to feel more meal-centric. Plus, if your living space is more on the “comfortable” side, you don’t want dinner guests to look at it the entire time they’re over. In a studio apartment, even a tidy space will display loads of personal belongings wherever you look. Use aluminum dividers to separate personal from social.

Call us at Keystone Home Products if you have questions about our dividers, how you can customize them, and how to order. We look forward to hearing from you.

Tired of closet doors that haven’t been updated since 1980? Or maybe you’re just tired of the struggle to open swinging closet doors. There are a lot of reasons you may be in the market for new closet doors. Or, perhaps you didn’t even realize until now that you were bothered by your closet doors. No matter the occasion, if you live in Toronto and you’re looking for an upgrade, Keystone Home Products has what you need!

Replace Swinging Doors

One of the most frequent reasons for closet door replacement is that the type of closet doors someone has isn’t what they want. Often, they have closet doors that swing outward and take up a lot of space. Trying to get into a closet that has swinging doors can be an ordeal. You have to make sure there’s enough floor space to accommodate the doors. If you live in a cramped room, that’s easier said than done. More often than not, you may end up wrestling with your closet doors and turning yourself into a pretzel to get to what you need on the shelf within.

Make accessing your belongings easy with sliding doors. Even if your floor is a mess, you can simply slide your closet door to the side, revealing the shelf or clothing rack you’re trying to reach. Additionally, one of the best parts of ordering sliding closet doors from Keystone is that we custom make closet doors. That means that no matter the size of your closet doorway, we can outfit it with sliding doors that fit perfectly.

Replace Mirror Doors

If you have mirror closet doors, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. Unfortunately, mirrors are more breakable than most building materials. If your mirror closet door has a broken mirror, it’s best to get it replaced quickly. Even if the pieces are still in place, it still poses a risk of injury. If any of the pieces fall onto the floor, you’re fairly likely to end up getting cut from stepping on it. Therefore, you should prioritize replacing them quickly.

Fortunately, Keystone Home Products has mirror closet doors and we can replace the one that got damaged quickly and easily. Give us a call and tell us a bit about what you need and we’ll have your order made in no time. No more dangerous, broken doors necessary.

Pick Your Color

When you order from Keystone, you can even pick the color that’s right for you. Check out our closet doors and see what kind of color is right for you. You can even choose different colors for the door and frame, making your closet doors personal.

Contact us if you have any closet door needs in Toronto and Keystone Home Products will be quick to help. We have answers to your questions and look forward to helping you find the right product for your home.

Mirror Bifold Doors Make Your Room Feel Bigger

Living with a small bedroom can be difficult. If you have the rest of the house to help you store things, that’s one thing. Sharing a space with others is a whole different story. If you share an apartment with roommates or share a family home, you know keeping everything you own in your room can be a real challenge. So, without further ado, Keystone Home Products is here to help you make your bedroom feel bigger with mirror bifold doors.

Reflect Light

One of the first things mirror bifold doors do to make your room feel bigger is reflect light. Small rooms can feel even smaller when they’re dark. Having mirrors in a space allows lamplight, sunlight, and any other kind of light source you have in your room to reflect. This means your room is easier to light up. A small lamp reflecting light off mirror bifold doors can make your whole room feel adequately lit. Thus, your room feels bigger.

Double Space

Reflecting a space back onto itself makes it feel bigger. This is because, looking into a mirror, you see the space available in your room twice over, making it feel twice as big. While this doesn’t actually give you more space to store things, it can trick your brain into feeling less cramped. This is why having mirror bifold doors will make your bedroom feel bigger.

If you want to do some cleaning that provides a similar feeling, try moving everything in your room toward the walls. If you have a walkway between your bed and the wall, remove it. Move any nightstands on that side of the bed to the other and push your bed toward the wall. Every bit of space that you move to be more toward the center of your room, the bigger it will feel. This extra space allows you more room to move around in, making the room feel less cramped overall. Plus, when you reflect a more open space, rather than a cramped one, the mirror doubling effects are even better.

View the Whole Closet

Mirror bifold doors have a special feature about them that standard, sliding doors can’t hope to compete with. Because they fold in half and open outwards, you’re able to see the whole closet at once. Sliding closet doors can tend to make small rooms feel smaller because they put limitations on what you can see all at once. Bifold doors allow you all the freedom of movement you desire. You’ll be able to comfortably look through your clothing without having to switch which side of the closet you’re looking at. That’s sure to make your bedroom feel bigger.

Full-Body Mirror Built In

Because our brains equate accessibility with comfort and space, having mirror bifold doors allows an additional comfort. Having a full-body mirror built into your closet doors allows you to try on new outfits and check them out easily. This ease of access is sure to help you with your sense of space.
